Job #3

Ambrose Bierce- Realism: contrast
  1. Wants to show life accurately and simply without adding in unnecessary things
  2. Gives details that matter in life and what usually happens in most cases

Washington Irving- Romantic: Contrast
  1. Shows you what you want to see and what life would be like if perfect
  2. Gives you an idea of what your life would be like if you could dream part of it out
Ambrose Bierce-Compare:
  1. He likes to make points using what's available and real

Washington Irving-Compare:
  1. Also makes points but sometimes adds unnecessary items or thoughts

The importance of each stories are that they have a real life sort of feeling. I don't like books where everything isn't real even in fiction books, and when Farquhar was swimming away and the soldiers and guards couldn't hit him I didn't like that, although he was dreaming or hallucinating so ill give that to Ambrose. I liked this short story better than Legend of Sleepy Hollow because of the ending and details were much more realistic, which all falls back to the writers style.

Job #2

"The captain had drawn his pistol, but did not fire"

Why didn't the captain take the shot and kill Farquhar? He was right there and could have easily hit him and killed him. Was it because he was waiting until his other guards were ready with there muskets? Or didn't have enough strength to pull the trigger?

Job #1

First of all, what a depressing book(not really). I thought it was a good book then *boom surprise ending.

"he was now in full possession of his physical senses. They were, indeed preternaturally keen and alert."       " he noted the prismatic colors in all the dew drops upon a million blades of grass." (Pg. 24 last paragraph)
I find this interesting that he had a stronger sense of his natural surroundings. He says that he could hear the sound of dragonfly's wings fluttering and could see the leaf veins. Now of course he isn't "with it" and he is dreaming and such but that fact that Ambrose put that in there is a weird supernatural thing, almost like he has superpowers like Spiderman where he could hear and see things that couldn't be seen or heard in the normal eyes/ears. Its can be considered confusing though why Ambrose threw that in there.

All in all its a good book!
